Merida day 3

So today we went to the town square and it was very crowded because day of the dead is in two days. I think that all the shops are pretty cool with all the Mayan glyph necklaces and stuff. The amount of shops and stuff selling little keychains with little Jaguars and Quetzals are plentiful, but i think they should work on size and all. I mean like you go into one of the shops and you see all these cool hats an rings and necklaces and bookmarks and, while I’m with 2 other people the store is crowded enough. But then a family of five walks in and your squeezed in like a can of sardines. But I’m being observant. No critisizm here. I mean walk into Aunt Agathas downtown and you’re walking sideways trying not to knock all the books off the shelf, or when you walk in the Himalayan Bazaar and you see these beautiful intricate artwork from halfway around the world and you’re practically ninjaing (yes that’s my new word) the things that stick out trying not to knock anything fragile or expensinve off the shelf.

Another nice thing I noticed was the little street carts on every single corner, selling things from spiced corn to packs of cigarettes. The problem with all this is that the streets are so narrow and crowded that its almost impossible to get by. But it’s managable.

Sorry about it being late. :/

Connor would approve of the word “ninjaing”.

Absorb. It may feel crowded now, but you may be surprised what feels normal later. Those of us from the U.S. need a fair amount of space around our bodies that many other cultures would feel is alien. I know I had to get used to much more touching and physical affection and bodies on bodies in very, very crowded buses, stores, etc., when I lived in the U.S.S.R. When I came home, Michigan felt empty and the stores made me feel tiny, tiny.

So… are you raring to get on the journey?

  2. Aunt Karen says:

Hi Joe – That all sounds pretty interesting. Take some photos so we can see the crowds too!

  3. Nannie says:

Keep coming with your take on things, Jo–Bopu.m and I are hanging on your every word. Love, Nannie

  4. Nannie says:

I’m trying hard to figure out how to send comments, Joe–I hope this registers. Love.

  5. Nannie says:

Thanks for the info on centers, Joe–I didn’t know anything about them. Today is our election day and Bopum and I are biting our nails and watching the returns. I think you’re probably movin’ on out now, having been comfortable in your nest of pillows for a while. Love you. Nannie

  6. Nannie says:

Of course I meant “cenotes” and not “centers”–this automatic spellcheck (or whatever it is) makes me crazy. Nannie again.
