Ice Cream

Yesterday my mom and I went out to lunch while our van is in the shop. We ate lunch at the Café Im Ray or something like that. We ate lunch and I had a “Gourmét” Ham and Cheese sandwich and my Mom had a very big light fluffy tamale. We decided that tamales can be big and fluffy, or small and dense. Just like matzah balls. After the long wait for our check, we paid, and left as soon as possible. After that we went to an ice cream place called “Helados Marilena” where they had ice creams ranging from Beer, to Avocado, to Yucca, to Bubble Gum. My mom got Jocote which is a kind of fruit, and I got Beer flavored, which didn’t taste anything like Beer. It was good, but it was just something to try. We then walked back to the hotel. (We’re staying at the Hotel Spring). Where we rested and I used the lobbys WiFi. A few hours later my dad got back with Juan (Stephanies’ sisters ex-husbands brother)  something like that. The van will be ready today this evening or so they say. But it was a long day and a good day. The air conditioner’s broken and my dad accidentally busted the front left tire, so we had to get a new one, but its all fixed.

Glad you’re patched up and ready to go. That ice cream sounds pretty fascinating! I haven’t heard of beer ice cream, but there was a trend in chocolate stout “floats” for a while at upscale restaurants. I liked the matzoh ball/tamale analogy, too. Do you find that within the same country, or between countries? The fluffiest tamales I’ve had are at Pilar’s and I thought that was probably an El Salvadoran version. The Mexican ones I’ve had are much denser.

Joe, good to hear about the adventure from your point of view. The food descriptions make a good counterpoint to the traditional Xmas stuff from your mother. How about posting a map or describing what you think is coming up next? Last night your mother’s call to me what cut off, so I just know you are not in Guatemala now.

Will you make us some beer ice cream when you get home? And some avocado ice cream? I wanna try it! Also will you make us some tamales?

Joe. I really like the idea of beer ice cream. Glad to know that Juan was able to help out with the car
